Coffee grounds are classified as household waste and are typically disposed of as general trash. When landfilled, they release methane—a greenhouse gas 34 times more potent than CO₂—and contribute to soil acidification. The disposal of 1 ton of coffee grounds generates approximately 338 kg of CO₂, equivalent to the annual emissions of 11,000 cars.
To address this issue, OAFE has developed BK, an eco-friendly material made by specially compounding coffee grounds with thermoplastic resins. This bio-based plastic offers excellent processability for extrusion and injection molding, reduces both CO₂ emissions and waste, and is more cost-effective than biodegradable resins.
